On September 19th, the opening of Mediating experience: Olafur Eliasson’s books
Artelibro presents Mediare l’esperienza: i libri di Olafur Eliasson [Mediating experience: Olafur Eliasson's books], an exhibitions and a editorial project on Saturday, September 19th, from 18:00, at Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna.
On Saturday, September 19th, from 18:00, at Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna, it will be possible to visit Mediare l’esperienza: i libri di Olafur Eliasson, an exhibition produced by Artelibro Art Book Festival thanks to the helpfulness of Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna, and curated by Luca Cerizza, featuring artist’s books and publications on the Danish-Icelandic artist, as well as one of his artworks.
An entire artistic itinerary, filtered and mediated through more than fifty books, will be presented in the beautiful historic setting of the Aula Magna of Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna. The accompanying work “The endless study”, a version of a 19th-century harmonograph, is part of an investigation into the correlation between space and sound undertaken by Olafur Eliasson. The library, which houses an important collection of manuscripts and printed books, will provide the ideal context for a dialogue at distance between its permanent collection and Eliasson’s books. A selection of ancient books about astronomical and astrological investigation will be put on display as an introduction to the main areas of interest of the artist, among which the boundary between art, science and natural phenomena.
The same process of “mediation” is also the basis for the editorial project commissioned by Artelibro Art Book Festival, and realized by Studio Olafur Eliasson and the artist himself.
The volume will be presented on September 19th at 18.00 at Accademia delle Scienze di Bologna. Luca Cerizza (co-editor of the volume) Caroline Eggel (editor and project manager of Studio Olafur Eliasson), and Michael Heimann (graphic designer of the publication and long-time collaborator of Eliasson).
The book, TYT (Take Your Time), Vol. 2: Printed Matter, follows TYT (Take Your Time) Vol. 1: Small Spatial Experiments, which documented the work progress at Studio Olafur Eliasson. As a daring editoral operation, TYT 2 is a compendium of books on and by Eliasson, photographed, manipulated and analyzed in a performative manner. In 144 pages Eliasson’s books are mediated through the design of Heimann und Schwantes, Berlin, and accompanied by brief descriptions as well as a collage text by the artist.
A conversation between Eliasson and Luca Cerizza introduces the intent of the volume: to analyze issues such as the relationship between the language of an exhibition and publishing, as well as that between experience of the artwork and its documentation.
Olafur Eliasson (Copenhagen, 1967), studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1995 he established Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin, a laboratory for spatial research in which he works with a team of architects, art historians, and material and light specialists. Eliasson represented Denmark at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and later that year installed The weather project in the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern, London. Exhibition venues include Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. Take your time, a survey exhibition organised by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2007, travelled to The Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, in 2008 and continues to further venues until 2010. Eliasson has engaged in several projects in public space, including the intervention Green river, carried out in various cities between 1998 and 2001; Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2007, London, designed with Kjetil Thorsen; and The New York City Waterfalls, commissioned by Public Art Fund in 2008. As professor at Universität der Künste Berlin, Eliasson founded the Institut für Raumexperimente in 2009.
