Renowned designer Todd Oldham and writer Kiera Coffee have created this massive monograph on seminal designer Alexander Girard as the ultimate tribute to this design icon.

This 672-page book covers virtually every aspect of Girard’s distinctive career. As one of the most prolific and versatile mid-20th century designers, Girard’s work spanned many disciplines, including textile design, graphic design, typography, illustration, furniture design, interior design, product design, exhibit design, and architecture. Exhaustively researched and lovingly assembled by designer Todd Oldham, this tome is the definitive must-have book on Girard’s oeuvre.

Girard’s repertoire includes an incredible list of projects, including his bold, colorful, and iconic textile designs for Herman Miller (1952-1975), his typographic designs for La Fonda del Sol restaurant (1960), his celebrated retail store Textiles and Objects (1961), his own Girard Foundation (1962) that houses his own extensive, personal collection of folk art from around the world, and his complete branding and environmental design for Braniff International Airways (1965).

Girard’s work continues to inspire new generations of designers and admirers, and this beautiful book is the ultimate tribute to his legacy.

Created by artist Gordon Young, and designed in collaboration with Why Not Associates, the Comedy Carpet is a celebration of comedy on an extraordinary scale...

Created by artist Gordon Young, and designed in collaboration with Why Not Associates, the Comedy Carpet is a celebration of comedy on an extraordinary scale. Referring to the work of more than 1,000 comedians and comedy writers, the carpet gives visual form to jokes, songs and catchphrases dating from the early days of variety to the present. Sited in front of Blackpool Tower, the 2,200m2 work of art contains over 160,000 granite letters embedded into concrete, pushing the boundaries of public art and typography to their limits.
A remarkable homage to those who have made the nation laugh, it’s also a stage for popular entertainment that celebrates entertainment itself.
The £2.6m Comedy Carpet was commissioned by Blackpool Council as part of the multi-million pound regeneration of the sea front including vital sea defence works. It was funded by CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) as part of it’s Sea Change programme.

Blackpool holds a unique place in the affections of generations of British holiday-makers and fun-seekers. As well as its sandy beaches, piers, amusement parks and pleasure beaches, it has many extraordinary buildings devoted to entertainment and show business, including the Grand Theatre, the Winter Gardens and the Blackpool Tower. Connecting these places together is the promenade known as the Golden Mile which stretches the length of the town.
As part of the council’s plans to regenerate the town and carry out necessary sea defence works, the entire length has been re-landscaped and three new headlands built. Created as a key work of art for the central headland, the Comedy Carpet will also be a stage for performances and events.
Designed in a cross shape, the carpet links the entrance of the Blackpool Tower to the beach and connects the north and south sides of the promenade. Laid out in a grid pattern in strips of 10 slabs each, the work can be read in different directions, from close up and from the top of the tower, with the font varying in size from a few centimetres to over a metre.

Words and writings are here intended both as a tool to evoke the image and a as self-standing statement. The artworks exhibited have been selected in the course of time through a research that the gallery has conducted on word with an artistic more than literary interest.

The Bible indicates the word as the first and unique act of creation, so powerful as to originiate the entire universe. During the 70s, conceptual art placed minimalist writings into one of the primary roles. Through the works made by some of the leading artists of that period, this exhibition aims at illustrating modern research on words in art: “L’Encyclopedia Britannica” by Joseph Kosuth, tapestries by Alighiero Boetti, literary titles by Giulio Paolini, scribbles by Cy Twombly, writings by Hanne Darboven, calligraphy by Shrin Neshat, works by Nicola De Maria, messages by Tibetan artists and several others artworks by contemporary and emerging artists.

Francesco Clemente first traveled to India in 1973 in search of “somewhere else.” The acutely contemporary world of India that he encountered, whose antiquity had been transformed and reinvented by a lively popular culture, enchanted him. The artist would find himself at home there over the next four decades.
During his visits, Clemente’s image-indulgent eye, always ready to “conquer the world as picture,” took innumerable routes through the ever-mutating cartography of Indian visual culture. In fact, it seems the images got used to him — they rotated around him, gravitated towards him, surrounded him by capillary attraction. Temple exteriors, shop signage, calendars, bidi wrappers, advertisements, graffiti… Clemente built up an archive of these Indian images — both in his memory and in his notebooks filled with hundreds of drawings, lying latent over decades, coalescing, talking to each other, eventually surfacing in his work in another incarnation, another context.

Or… what if we write out a bunch of words and sentiments from our list and use them in a “statement of purpose” visioning session? We can cross some of them out and make it look kind of messy and punkish. Then, put ‘Ps & Qs‘ on top in a nice font…

<var>ambivalent, but not apathetic
<var>pastiche plus thrift</var>
<var>snarky smark and the spunky bunch
</var>if cartoons had nightmares,
<var>catalyzing contradiction
</var>not comedy, but not above the one-liner
<var>lawnchair pontificators
</var>anything is possible, get back to work.</var>

<var><var>t could be nice to do something like this for the press release as well. Or why not just use this document? Maybe in doing that, we can avoid committing to some lofty mission statement that rambles on about all of the things that we are “exploring”. Besides, the struggle to define ourselves has really become one of our defining characteristics. And institutions totally dig that type of self-reflexive dialog. Yeah, let’s just say that this is the press release.</var></var>

<var>Cheap Art America is MacGregor Douglas Harp and Victor Hu. P’s & Q’s is the fourth in a series of group exhibitions dedicated to providing self-publishing artists, who generally share their work through zines and other printed matter, with a platform for exhibition, experimentation and exploration outside of the printed format. Curated by Aimee Lusty. </var>

From his earliest work Stewart Home has expressed an avantgardist desire to write himself into the archive of culture...

From his earliest work Stewart Home has expressed an avantgardist desire to write himself into the archive of culture. Mixing myth and polemic, with plagarism and a savage ideological critique, the parodic manifestos of Generation Positive, progressed into the self- historicising magazine Smile, the Neoists, and finally The Art Strike — an aggressive appropriation of Gustav Metzger’s strike proposal. Home’s return to anti- art practice saw the publication of a rash of polymorphous perversities, including Red London, and Defiant Pose, exhibitions at City Racing, workfortheeyetodo, and with Imprint 93, as well as ongoing performance, prank and film work. His cultural output now forms a significant archive of counter-cultural activities, not only written into the archive of culture, but networked across it, in a practice which seamlessly moves between unearthing unknown radical histories such asBlack Mask — Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers, reworkings of Lettrist Cinema, and writing projects, such as Book Works’ recent Semina series.

Presented as part of Again, A Time Machine, alongside the ongoing A Poster Project by Jonathan Monk, this is the first US retrospective of Home’s work and features a selection of artwork, including Art Strike Bed, Vermeer II and Becoming (M)other, publications and ephemera and a live performance with Kenneth Goldsmith.

Book Works is funded by Arts Council England. Project supported by Arts Council England Grants for the Arts; The Henry Moore Foundation; and material for Stewart Home archive generously lent by Mark Pawson.
