Realized in 2007 by Daniel Gustav Cramer (Germany) and Haris Epaminonda (Cyprus), The Infinite Library is a project in constant evolution. As the same artists says: “ It is a vast archieve of books, each of them created by books already exsisting , numbered as if they are new ones. Each book has it’s own structure, reassambled each time from an original material and from the possibilities that comes with it. While the library is expanding with the arrivals of new books, each single piece implicates the potential possibility to become the centre of a spatial installation, an extention of the subject, of shape, of context, as the logically meaning of the rythm of the book.”

The artist book reflects upon itself, around it’s expansions and multiplications. With the new technology and the complete revision of syntax of the art-object, the artists are looking further, without conventions and prejudices; they rearrange the format, the function-book, they reinvents productive methods, and the habits around distribution, elaborating new strategies. The exhibition OUT-BOOK tries with a census of those works, dividing them into two sections. The first includes works by the historical avantgarde from the seventies (from Mallarmé to Depero, from Munari to Debord, to the sixties with Fontana, Manzoni and Warhol and the seventies of Maciunas, Boetti and Nauman). The second contemporary section presents researches of famous international artists that open up to an extra gap between form and meaning. A specific arrangement will include stations where each artist will make practicable it’s own proper book.

What happens if cinema stops ? If the film interrupts and each single photogram is brought into bareness ?

The work of Giovani Bellavia is this: to return the film into the status of single image, to create new life from a modular montage, into specularities and a viral of colours. It is not any longer about following a movement, but to emerge into the picture and read it, to make it become a true textual corpus.

Between the images immortalized appears two women reading: Monica Vitti in The Night (La Notte) by Antonioni, who reads nestled on a staircase, and Paola Pitagora in “I Pugni in Tasca” by Marco Bellocchio, who stares into a misterious monitor-mirror from which outburst the carachters of a magical alphabet. Just as the film witholds traces and signs, also the book has become a container of memories: the book of paper and the book of the future, the traditional book and the futuristic one, the instrumental book of concentration and the ansious questioned one, the book that assorbes, the book that evaporates …

STORIES OF VINE IN BOLOGNA

Memories, documents and photographies

Biblioteca Accademia Nazionale di Agricoltura

via Castiglione, 11

The exhibition suggest documents from the historical archives and from the Library of the National Academy of Agriculture, that testimonates the activity of the Agrarian Society in the field of vine.

From documents shown it appears how cultivation of the vine hasn’t been but merely important to the activites in the bolognese area, and how in the 19th centuries, it hasn’t been possible to achieve a result of a high quality production, because of structural reasons connected with the type of the agricultural organisation of the time, so much that the Agrarian Society in the 1875 was inspired to institute a Trust of craftsmen with the aim to improve the quality of the productions.

The exhibition is divided into four sections, each of which handle a specific theme: From the evolution of the landscape of the vines to the ampelography(a recognition towards the characters that are beeing cultivated), to specific sanitary regulations (in particulary the Fillossera that have mutated the European scene of the vine cultivation) until the 19th century Trust of vine cultivators for the restoration of the bolognese vine cultivation.

“ Do you know what a crazy bibliofilus I am”. Like this, in August 1869, Giosue Carducci wrote to Giuseppe Chiarini, confidentially revealing once again to his fraternity friend his love of the beautiful, good and rare book, perhaps ornated with xilographies and etchings, just as to represent the best printing and, so, the most credited fiological edition of a work by a loved and studied author. Of this passionated bibliofila that have followed Carducci during the whole of his life, this exhibition only gives us a smaller selection. The poetic text exposed, more or less printed in the XVII century, derives from the shelfes in the bedroom of the literate, the room of the Home- Museum where the most precious prints are on display of the great carduccian library. There are famous authors (from Boiardo to Marino, from Tansillo to Gaspara Stampa) and less famous where the nucleous is arranged by genres: of which among others, eroic and sacred poems, madrigals, satir, tragedies, tragicomics and pastorals.

As an anticipation to the celebrations for the 300 years since it’s foundation, the Institute of Sciences of Bologna, from which the University Library has it’s origins, is presented in an exhibition with works belonged to the personal library of the creator of the Institute of Sciences, the duke Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (Bologna 1658- 1730), a scientist and general at the services of Emperor Leopold I of Hasburg and then of the Holy Church. During the military expeditions and the diplomatic missions for which he travelled around Europe and in Asia, Marsili collected printed books and manuscripts that he used for his studies and, after the foundation of the Institute of Sciences, that become a precious librarian heritage at disposal for academic scholars. The works on show have been selected for their rarity and for the importance of the editions, but mostely with the intent to exemplify the interests and the elements of study of the poliedric duke Marsilio, so that to become the areas studied within the Institute: anatomy, natural sciences, geography, chemics, physics, astonomy, antiques and military arts.

Busy for several years with the project of the catalogues and the digitalization of the paper and photographic archieve of Charlie Chaplin, as well as in the restoration of the films of the master, the Cineteca of Bologna has bought, in 2008, and thanks to the contribution by Fondazione Carisbo, a precious private collection of more than ninty original sketches realized for the films by Charlie Chapman: Modern Times, The Great Dictator and Monsieur Verdoux.

Of all the paper materials that are involved during the creation of a movie, the sketches are those who incarnates a first, and therefore idealistic, visual concept of a film. In particulary the drawings by Russel Spencer The Great Dictator- that includes some of the sequences presented in the original scenes but not in the actual final film- have an expressionist style, almost naif, characters then efficently trasported from Chaplin in one of the films that have had a major impact of the history of the cinema.

Ernst Gombrich and C.W. Ceram have clearly teached us: art history can be diffused in a pleasant way. The life of the artists and their ways of looking at works of art implicates in the bottom end tastely ingredients of suspence and of adventures that are tipical of the novel. How many times haven’t the litterary critics, after have been reading an essay that, finally, have kept them awake the whole night, esclamated with a canonic expression: It’s an essay, but you might read it as a novel !”

The cicle of meetings to be held are dedicated to those books with the title” essays as novels” organized within the framework of Artelibro 2010. Famous writers of novels such as Melania Mazzucco, will explain why the have feelt the neccesety to write essays with the intense rythm of a novel around the life and works of Tintoretto. FROM ANCIENT GREECE TO MODERN SONGWRITERS. FORMS OF POETRY IN MUSIC

20.30-21.30

Aula Magna Santa Lucia

via Castiglione, 36

Perhaps the first song of the human beeing was the word o perhaps the first word of the human was the song: anyhow, since, as Cicerone said, “est autem in dicendo etiam cantus quidam obscurior”, in this misterious expressive relation between vocal and sound lies all the magic of nature and the human personality.

The works by songwriters will be at centre of the attention during the relation held by Roberto Vecchioni, artist, writer and professor that will speak about the poetic forms in music, to begin with Grecean lirics until present.

THE VERTIGO OF THE LIST

20.00 – 21.30

Aula Magna di S. Lucia

In the Iliade there appears two ways of representing. The first one you got when Omero describes the shiled of Achille: it is a complete and concluded form where everything that you might know about a city is reppresented, it’s contado, it’s wars and it’s pacific rituals. The other way is represented when the poet doesn’t manage to tell how many and who all the Acheian warriors were:

He asks the muses for help, but he has to limitate himself to it so called enormous catalogue of the ships, that concludes ideally in an eccettera. This second way of representation is a list. There are lists that have practical reasons of beeing, and they are infinite, as the list of all the books in a library; but there are also others that wishes to give an idea of the numerous grandeurs, and those ones remains incompleted at the edges of the indefined. The literature of all times is enriched indefinitively with lists, from Esiodo to Joyce, from Ezechiele to Gadda. Often they are lists extended by the pure pleasure of numbering, because of the refrain of the list or, further, for the giddy pleasure to put together elements without a particular connection between them, which happens in the so called caotic numberings. The scope will not only be to discover a literally genre rarely analized, but also to show how figurative arts are capable of suggesting indefinite lists, even when the representation seems strictly limited by the frame of the painting.

TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF DESIRES FOR THE RELICS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

18.00 – 19.00

Palazzo Re Enzo – Sala del Quadrante

At the beginning of the eighties a generation of collectors and of antiquarian librarians discovered the tastiness about the first editions of the 20th century Italian, a genre of the book market that until then had interested a very few appasionate collectors. The first catalogues started to be published, one by one, where our eyes could clearly see colourful books and futuristic magazines, as the great season of Italian poetry such as from Campana to Ungaretti until Montale, the semi-secrets by many authors that conquerred celebrity later on, the first novels by Alberto Moravia or by Romano Bilenchi, the neo -realism or ermetism. If you might found a fresh one it might cost you around euro 250, merely more. It wasn’t about fetischism of owning the rare book, it was about the fantastic experience to rewrite the latest century of Italian cultural history.

At the middle of the 19th century , in France appeared a handbook of Bizantine art. It arrived in a kind of obscure way from the Mountain Athos, and the copy that served as the base for the French translator-editor where bought in Athens, where it was in the hands of a misterious Greek that had copied the text himself. How is it then that this text, even if dating back from the 16th century (but the date is questionated), also handled in parts the eliographic techniques ? It is indeed possible to reveal the “mistery” and we will see how.

With out no doubt the personality to whom art history of today owns the most is to Aby Warburg (1866-1929) “ hebrew by blood, with his heart in Hamburg, Fiorentin in his soul”. As a thesis he suggests, to his professor’s disgust, to study a one single detail of the panel of the Nimph in a work by Botticelli. He is interested in studying the persistance of some ancient models that transits not only through the cultivated arts and poetry, but also through minor details:

bigot imaginary, the lunars, alchemy, esoterism, superstition. He revolutionates his legendary library (put in safe in London as moved from Hamburg during the nazism) according to the laws of “good neighbourhood”. I.e. it is not a specialized library, but a vertical one, personal, inventive, just as his studies, that goes from the myth of the snake of the Pueblo American Indians to the astrological circle at Palazzo Schifanoia, from the Medicean parties to memory and Mnemosyne, and still others.

The collaboration between Cesare Bettini and the most vital interpreters of the botanical and anatomic bolognese scene dates back from the 1834. His frequency of the Art Academy had turned him into an expert in practice and in drawing. A steady hand, a neatness in his outlines,

his discerning vision, follows him both in his artistic expressions as well as in his praxis of anatomy. In the framework of the collaboration with Luigi Calori it is suitable to remember the plates drawn from real and on stone, that goes with the studies of the brain of an african from Guinea. Together with the drawing Bettin made models in vax and plaster, strategically for the didactic and testimony of the artist’s close link to the grand vax-plastic art bolognese tradition. Today those models are conserved in the Museum of Anatomic Vax Models Luigi Cattaneo.

The classics who made Italy aims to illustrate the story of the Italian culture, from the 13th century onwards, through a selection of works and of editions. The editorial aspects of a text has infact a two-edged value: from a side they are informing about the reception and the diffusion of a certain work after it’s publication; on the other hand they shows how the printed book have influenced the human way of writing and reading.

Each work offer the reader also the material aspect of the book, stimulating both eye and mind through precise editorial strategies such as form, character- type, the presence or the non presence of illustrations, dedications, etc. The Classics who made Italy is not aiming to reach exclusivly an audience of collectors, but will also appeal to those who haven’t yet tried the emotion when browsing or reading a text in it’s original version.

If the text can be corrupted or interpreted the silence doesn’t allow misunderstandings. In this way memory that takes form in a text is diffrent from the memory fixed in an image. Both takes care of what should otherwise be lost. What in each instant risks to be lost is the micro- fragment of truth of which we can be testimonies. The publication, curated by Stella Rudolph, inquires around the relation between the artist with the cameranian church of Saint Nicholas (Niccolò) and has acted as a base to launch a project that valorizes the figure of Maratti and of the civic artistical reality, and has been followed up also by an exhibition “ Collections and diffusions of the Maratti models. ICONOGRAPHY AND ARCHETYPES. The Form of Painting 1985-1994

Palazzo Re Enzo – Sala del Capitano

The volume includes the texts that have been part of the exhibitions held by Mario Diacono between 1985 and 1994 in his galleries in Boston and New York. They refers to more than thirty artists, Americans, Italians and Germans, almost all painters. The decision to privilegate painting is in part because of the centrality that painting as a medium- deconstructed and replasted – has earned, after the years of Minimalism, Conceptualism, Arte Povera, Post-Minimalism and Body Art. But it is radicated mostly because of the fact that evolution of the 20th century art, at least until the mid sixties, has been determined by painting. In the eighties the painting did become a form through which the artist inquiered, in the same moment as art was reaching a historical fulfilment. The book can also been seen as a significant critical breakthrough of the American works in the Maramotti collections, that from the mid seventies had been concentrated on the immediate contemporary , almost turned into an alternative catalogue. In fact in those texts many of the works bought by Achille Maramotti in that decade are beeing discussed, as to testimony of the intense intellectual exchange between the author and the collector, that continued for over thirty years.

At the centre of the last book by Chiara Frugoni there is the Middle Ages and it’s images: its about miniatures, frescos or details of frescos, sculptures, ebany that the author analizes through tematic lines, suggestioning in the apperances of iconographic models the simbolic rappresentation of political concepts, etics and religious fundamentals of the medieval culture. In this context Chiara Frugoni indicates the signs that in fact express even only an accerted or accepted difference: in particulary by showing it through various images of Jews, of representations of the contexts between Church- Sinagoga, of figures in jewish clothes as to reveal in what way the medieval in an artistic context have been tollerant towards “others”, without doubt more frequently than in the reality.

11.00-12.00

Palazzo Re Enzo – Sala del Capitano

piazza Nettuno

The Storia dell’Illustrazione Italiana is the only critical and sistematical work regarding the illustrations that have carachterized the librarian and editorial journalism in Italy from the 15th until the 20th century. It deals with the theme of the image as a reproduction by the way of print, reaching from the etching to the poster, from carachters to comic strips, not excluding postcards, the ex libris and the collectable figures. The book offers a vast context of life and uses in which art and material culture is unified. This new edition presents a rich enclousure of colour images and in black and white, as well as a general bibliography of extrodinary measures, that for the first time is on disposal for art historicals, illustrators and cultural professionals. To those, also a bibliographic monography dedicated to the principal illustrators dealt with in the volume.

The book is an intense and whirling journey inside the nacelle of time of Il Resto del Carlino, to

understand what it means to be reporters of the history, and to tell the last 125 years of world history. The volume is articolated in 13 chapters that reassumes the events of recent history. Each chapter is opended with a particular focus on a historic classification and the schematic and cronological summary of major events. The photography of the whole of each single decade has been commissioned to an editorial on a central theme and predominant of the decade, then commissioned to the collaborators of the newspaper. Inside the chapters the volume alterns the initial pages with the most important news and the comments of some collaborators of importance, with other unsuspected vocies, that during history have left a trace on the pages of the newspaper regarding the everyday life of a time period, often through a very accurate modern point of view.

Leopold I (1640-1705) convalidates his Habsburgian domination on the Danubian- Balcan territory.

Among the main figures taking part in the conqueror of the territories of the Hungarian Crown, earlier in the hands of the Turks, is the Bolognese general and scientist Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (1658- 1730). Plenipotential of the imperial part when defining the borders during peace, and artefician of one of the major projects of the new regulamentation of the south- orental boarder in which politics, science and armery are resulting as alliates of neccessity. Also acting as a scientist, member of the most important European scientific academies, and founder in Bologna of the Institute of Sciences, Marsili often loves to point out the scientific regolamentations around the armed professions, as a privilieged meeting point between the teorical analisis and the concrete practical.

Through the works by art historicans and historicans, we can trace the works and the dark sides, the masterpices and the biographic events of masters that shouldn’t be considered as supernatural genius, but persons in flesh and blood, just like one of us. It seems to be obvious, but in fact, this relecture of the activities of the artists, also in the relation of the work by the artists considering their personal adventures, is a grand way of gain comprehension of art history and to be able to interpret the master pieces in the context of their human reality.

THE VERTIGO OF THE LIST

20.00 – 21.30

Aula Magna di S. Lucia

via Castiglione, 36

In the Iliade there appears two ways of representing. The first one you got when Omero describes the shiled of Achille: it is a complete and concluded form where everything that you might know about a city is rappresented, it’s contado, it’s wars and it’s pacific rituals. The other way is represented when the poet doesn’t manage to tell how many and who all the Acheian warriors were:

He asks the muses for help, but he has to limitate himself to it so called enormous catalogue of the ships, that concludes ideally in an eccettera. This second way of rappresentation is a list. There are lists that have practical reasons of beeing, and they are infinite, as the list of all the books in a library; but there are also others that wishes to give an idea of the numerous grandeurs, and those ones remains incompleted at the edges of the indefined. The litterature of all times is enriched indefinitively with lists, from Esiodo to Joyce, from Ezechiele to Gadda. Often they are lists extended by the pure pleasure of numbering, because of the refrain of the list or, further, for the giddy pleasure to put together elements without a particular connection between them, which happens in the so called caotic numberings. The scope will not only be to discover a litterally genre rarely analized, but also to show how figurative arts are capable of suggesting indefinite lists, even when the representation seems strictly limited by the frame of the painting.

The phenomen of the festival dress the everyday life in the city as well as in the countryside, in theatres such as in the villas, and at the same time it belongs to the cultural system of art. Common to figurative art and scenography are the techniques of the arts inside the civilization of image. At the beginning the festivity doesn’t have a privilieged and particular scenic place, it’s environment is the city as a whole, it’s streets, it’s squares. The every day aspect and festivities is transformed from beeing short-lived, from occasional presences that with time gest structured. Who organizes is also who recieves in a scheme of persuation and of use. In Bologna on the Main Square (Piazza Maggiore) the whole city, in places specifically arranged for, and socially diversified, partecipated at the event of the day in San Bartolomeo during the Pork Festivity. The Bizzarie di varie figure, printed in Livorno in the year of 1624, costitutes the most vital and original etchings of a deeply creative florentin artist: Giovanni Battista d’Antoni Bracelli, who operated between 1616 and 1649. A creation this one of visual strangeness, composed by funny as well as surprinsingly, variations of human form, trasfigurated and constructed in an incredible variety of objects, materials and elements animeted and inanimated. The Bizzarie, an artistical enigma without predecessors nor explanations, are proposed as remarkable forerunner of the artistic movements of the 20th century, from Surrealism to Dadaism.

The volume “Un gioiello del Barocco romano a Camerano. La chiesa di S. Faustina e la cappellania istituta da Carlo Maratti”, illustrates the story of a close connection between Carlo Maratti (1625-1713), one of the most estimated exponents of the 17th century classicism, and his birthplace, Camerano in the province of Ancona. Graphic examples from Ascoli to Camerano”.

The book by Mauro Bellei “ 900 in Sassi”, edited in three languages by the publishing house Les Trois Ourses, presents a particular art history of the last century by the study of some archetypical stones. An architipycal stone, through it’s inclusions, it’s venes and it’s stratifications, is a key of interpretation to a particular artist. The collection of the presentated stones forms an interpretation of twentyfive artists that have influenced the century. At the end the reader can go on follwing this trace with the serach of a stone by a favourite artist. This book is also a tribute to Bruno Munari that in 1971 published “Da lontanto era un’isola” (From afar it was an island).

TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF DESIRES FOR THE RELICS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

At the beginning of the eighties a generation of collectors and of antiquarian librarians discovered the tastiness about the first editions of the 20th century Italian, a genre of the book market that until then had interested a very few appasionate collectors. The first catalogues started to be published, one by one, where our eyes could clearly see colourful books and futuristic magazines, as the great season of Italian poetr,y such as from Campagna to Ungaretti until Montale, the semi-secrets by many authors that conquerred celebrity later on, the first novels by Alberto Moravia or by Romano Bilenchi, the neo -realism or ermetism. If you might found a fresh one it might cost you around euro 250, merely more. It wasn’t about fetischism of owning the rare book, it was about the fantastic experience to rewrite the latest century of Italian cultural history.

In this context Chiara Frugoni indicates the signs that in fact express even only an accerted or accepted difference: in particulary by showing it through various images of Jews, of rappresentations of the contexts between Church- Sinagoga, of figures in jewish clothes as to reveal in what way the medieval in an artistic context have been tollerant towards “others”, without doubt more frequently than in the reality.

The book offers a vast context of life and uses in which art and material culture is unified. How is it then that this text, even if dating back from the 16th century (but the date is questionated), also handled in parts the eliographic tecniques ?

I.e. it is not a specialized library, but a vertical one, personal, inventive, just as his studies, that goes from the myth of the snake of the Pueblo American Indians to the astrological circle at Palazzo Schifanoia, from the Medicean parties to memory and Mnemosyne, and still others.

understand what it means to be reporters of the history, and to tell the last 125 years of world history.
